I am a professional painting contractor. Faced with the daunting task of stripping countless coats of lead paint from a very large 1850's captain's house, I took the SPR for a test drive. I timed several 4 sq foot test areas and found that the SPR could strip an area only marginally slower than manual abrasion with much better results and much less effort. I immediately ordered two more units. The concept is fantastic and the units are extremely effective (though stripping paint off a house is never effortless).
However, the build quality of these units is substandard. Within 1 week of starting the project, two of the three units had broken power cords. Within 2 weeks, all 3 units had broken power cords, with one unit suffering breakage both at the handle and at the plug. I assume this is covered under the warranty, but cannot afford the downtime to send the units back. I took a unit to my local hardware store that is an authorized makita repair shop and does power tool repair on other brands. The repairman opened up one of the tools and immediately declared that he would not work on the tool. It's pretty haphazard in there. There was also visible scorching on the inside of the plastic housing.
It's a great idea, and the unit DOES work very well, but I wouldn't expect long-term durability and for what it is, $400-$500 is absolutely ludicrous. If Makita or another major tool company made this, it would cost
