This seems to be the same unit as the Kendal INDUSTRAL GRADE 160 WATTS 2.5 LITERS DIGITAL HEATED ULTRASONIC CLEANER also sold at Amazon and you can read some helpful user reviews there. At about $20 cheaper, this seems a good deal.
My guess is the 160 Watts refers to the water heater power, and is nothing to do with the ultrasonic cleaning strength.
A drop of dish washing detergent in the water definately helps, and for really dirty items cleaning using some alchohol in the water also helps (but be very aware of the potential fire hazard).
There is a heater which can be optionally turned on and heats and maintains the water at 65 degrees C to assist with cleaning. The heater eventually times out and turns itself off if you leave it on (contrary to a review in of the Kendal). It takes only a few minutes to heat up, and for many items heating may not be necessary. 65 degrees is pretty hot, but if you are dumb enough (like me) it's not so hot that you can't put your fingers in very quickly to pull something out although you'll likely express a mild expletive.
I couldn't help but play and experiement with it. It does a really great job of cleaning items like eye glasses, but to be effective on greese and grime I found that a drop of detergent as well as several cycles at it's maximum 480 second setting were really needed.
Overall, well designed, easy to use, nice looking and I'm sure will be prove to be very handy at cleaing many items.
I think that this was the right purchase for my needs, but as mentioned, I have nothing to compare it's effeciency of cleaning against. It does have a nice large (metal) tank compared to similarly priced units, and if that perhaps means cleaning takes 3 minutes instead of 2 or 8 instead of 4, so what?
